How to Convert Your Antique Double Bed to a Queen Bed

I recently posted about our antique bed makeover, but I forgot to share something really important -- how we convert our antique beds from double, or full-size, to queen size.

It can be very easy and affordable to convert most beds to queen, depending on the type of rails you have and how they are attached to your head board and foot board.

If your bed is put together with these flat double hooks or with screws, you can purchase new adjustable rails from Amazon and from many used furniture mercantiles. The rails are oriented differently than usual and they have adjustable brackets attached, to prevent your foundation from sliding off the rails.

You can also adjust the length of the rails to accommodate the longer queen mattress.

If you and your partner have to roll over in unison, and aren't getting quality sleep on your antique double bed, you might want to think about replacing the rails with a conversion kit. Although we had to remove the beautiful wood rails on our bed, it was worth it. Our quality of sleep improved, as did our energy levels. Exchanging a set of rails for better health was totally worth it to us!

The bed looks great. While a queen mattress is about six inches wider than a double bed, that is only three inches on either side, so it doesn't look weird at all. You don't really notice it .

A bonus is that we now have the old maple rails to use for another re-purposing project. Win,win!
