How to Landscape Your Yard for Free

Let's face it. Landscaping can be really expensive. On  recent visit to my daughter's new home in Alabama we went shopping for trees or shrubs for her yard and I was stunned!  I thought: there has got to be a better way.

In our old historic neighborhood, we all shared our plantings and seeds. Whether we were saving rare old tomato seeds, or thinning our iris, digging up "volunteers", or removing old sod, we always offered our plantings to our neighbors first. The problem with a new neighborhood, is that no one has any old plantings to share -- but this doesn't have to stop you from getting previously loved plants!

Internet sites like Craigslist and Freecycle are changing the world. Here are some things I found last week on my local Craigslist to help you landscape your yard:

Did you know you can find free tools?  Sometimes people are moving away or changing their lifestyle and just want to pass items on quickly, without the hassle of trying to sell them. This set of tools was available this week! You may need a good shovel to take advantage of the free plant offers you find.

Here are some free trellises, just waiting for someone to come along and pick them up.

You may be able to score some sod when someone decides to expand their garden. In our old home, we removed an old sidewalk, and replaced it with sod that a neighbor didn't need anymore.

This juniper is already dug up and ready for someone to take.

These rhododendron are being offered for free -- all you need to do is dig them up!

How about a fifteen foot tall pine tree? It's already potted and ready for you to haul away!

This flowering shrub is overgrown, and the owners say it has to go!

Are you a frugal gardener and landscaper? What kinds of things do you do to save money on your yard?
