How to Decorate When You're Broke

We've all been there. We want to freshen up our homes, but our home decor budget is non-existent. Here are some ideas that you can use to decorate your home when you're broke.

Do you have some old books laying around?  If you don't, your local library or thrift store may have some "free" bins, or "almost free" bins full of obsolete encyclopedias and damaged books that are perfect for upcycling. Learn to make this Juju inspired wreath here.

Upcycle your old poster-board into a giant wall flower!

Take a page from an old book to dress up black plastic nursery pots.

Grab a spool of twine from the junk drawer to turn old bottles into stylish decor.

Grab that twine again to dress up dated cabinet hardware.

Get the look of expensive Anthropologie cabinet knobs -- you'll never believe what these knobs are made from!

Update old-fashioned lampshades with colorful and inexpensive nylon twine.

Paint is one of the cheapest way to update a room. I found the paint I used for these painted stripes in a free pile in the basement of our building. Your city may have a paint drop-off where you can "shop" for free. Craigslist is another place to find free paint.

Add a beachy look to your decor for pennies. Would you believe these starfish were made from toilet paper?

Get that "Pottery Barn" look with faux coral. It's made with -- you guessed it -- toilet paper.
