Castles in the Air

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.    Henry David Thoreau  (1817 - 1862)

This quote has always been so inspirational to me, so much so that for many years I kept a copy of this Mary Engelbreit lithograph on display in my kitchen.  This is the quote that spurred me to join committees, do volunteer work, build my resume while staying home with children, and ultimately it inspired me to go back to school.

Little did I know, all those evenings, cleaning up the kitchen, looking at the lovely Mary Engelbreit image, I was going to feel inspired so literally by it!  Not just the saying, but by the sweet way the artist illustrated it.  As a young mother, I would sit in the kitchen in the evenings and dream and plan and clip coupons and go over to-do lists.  And sometimes I would find myself reading these words, and remembering myself and my husband when we were courting and playing on the beach, and dreaming dreams.

Those of you who were reading this blog during our house hunting days may remember when I talked about a house we found on a beach, destined for the wrecking ball, begging to saved.  I could not stop thinking and dreaming about this house -- our very own sand castle!

And we dared to dream a dream.

This ocean front home had lost it's lovely view, due to a growing sand dune.

So, we began to literally dream of a castle in the air.

And now we are putting foundations under it.

Who knew that a sweet drawing and a Thoreau quote would inspire us to build a sand castle in the air?
